Reformer Pilates
Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates that utilizes a specialized piece of equipment called the reformer. The reformer features a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, and various attachments that allow for a wide range of exercises to be performed. Reformer Pilates focuses on building core strength, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall body alignment and control. It is a low-impact, full-body workout that can be tailored to individual fitness levels and goals.
Mat Pilates
Mat Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on core strength, flexibility, and overall body conditioning. It involves performing a series of controlled movements on a mat, using your own body weight as resistance. Mat Pilates emphasizes proper alignment, breath control, and mind-body connection to improve posture, balance, and overall physical well-being.
Strength Pilates
Strength Pilates is a dynamic fusion of traditional Pilates principles and strength training techniques. It focuses on building functional strength, especially in the core, while also targeting major muscle groups like the glutes, arms, and legs. Using tools such as resistance bands, light weights, or bodyweight, it emphasizes controlled movement, proper alignment, and stability. This approach enhances muscle tone, posture, and flexibility without adding bulk. Strength Pilates is suitable for all fitness levels and is especially effective for those looking to gain strength while improving mobility and body awareness.
Which Type Is Best For Me?
If you are a beginner, our recommendation is to start with mat Pilates, whether at home or in a class setting. You’ll want to develop familiarity with core Pilates techniques and movements. YouTube has plenty of great options! One of our favorites, Isa Welly, is linked below.
Once ready, you can try a Pilates reformer class or strength Pilates, which can be done on a mat or reformer.
